Cooking & measurements

Cooking measurement converter

Choose your units and ingredient to convert a kitchen measurement. Cup sizes and ingredient forms are shown explicitly.

Use the cooking measurement converter

Decimals and fractions work: 1.5, 1/2, 1 1/2 or 1½.

Recipe cup: 240 ml. Metric cup: 250 ml. Tablespoon: 15 ml. Teaspoon: 5 ml. Weight-to-volume results are ingredient-specific estimates; a kitchen scale is more reliable.

How to use it

  1. Enter an amount, including a decimal or fraction if needed.
  2. Choose the starting and target units. For weight-to-volume conversions, select the ingredient and its form.
  3. Select Convert measurement and copy the result. Weigh ingredients when precision matters.

A worked example

Using the reference chart, ½ recipe cup of chopped walnuts is approximately 56.5 g. Whole walnuts have a different reference weight, so choose the form your recipe uses.

Common questions

Which cup and spoon sizes does this use?

A recipe cup is defined here as 240 ml, a metric cup as 250 ml, a tablespoon as 15 ml and a teaspoon as 5 ml. These are explicit tool conventions; check recipes using other national cup or spoon sizes.

Why do I have to select an ingredient?

Cups measure volume and grams measure weight. Flour, honey and nuts have different weights for the same volume. Whole, sliced and chopped ingredients also pack differently.

How precise are the results?

Unit arithmetic is rounded to eight significant digits. Ingredient weights are approximate reference values adapted from King Arthur Baking’s chart, with proportional estimates for other volumes. Filling technique and ingredient variation affect real measurements.
